But what kind of work do welders and machinists do, exactly? They read blueprints and specifications, prepare machinery and equipment, and complete projects. According to national data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers earned an average annual salary of $41,000 in May 2017. Machinists and tool and die makers, meanwhile, earned an average of about $44,000 in the same timeframe. The job outlook for 2016 to 2026 is mostly flat for machinist jobs, with welders and similar jobs expected to grow about 6% over those ten years.

The American Welding Society says on their website  https://www.aws.org/foundation/page/workforce-development “By 2025, our nation’s workforce will need over 400,000 welders to satisfy the demands of several industries.”

A senior vice president for Murphy Company, a mechanical engineering solutions company in St. Louis, echoed that statistic. Mark Bengard told KPLR 11 St. Louis, “With the workforce getting older and people retiring from our industry we do need a lot of the younger kids starting to come through here with the technical skills.”
