The end of the school year is quickly approaching. What can I do to help my eligible seniors get the Imagine America award before summer break?

I’m so glad you asked! There are several things that counselors can do before school closes for the summer to make sure their eligible students are on track to become Imagine America scholarship recipients.

1. First, register your school.

If you have 2009 graduates who are planning to attend a participating Imagine America career college, make sure your school is registered and the contact information is up-to-date. Registration is free and allows any eligible student from your school to apply for the Imagine America scholarship, giving them a chance to receive $1,000 in tuition assistance. There are three ways you can register your school:

  • Complete the online form found on our web site, www.Imagine-America.org. Go to the High School Counselors tab and select the Sign Up or Update Your High School Info link.
     
  • Email your school’s name, complete mailing address and telephone number, counselor’s first and last name, and counselor’s email address to scholarships@imagine-america.org.
     
  • Contact me, Danica Benson, at 202.336.6724 with that information.

Please allow approximately 2-3 business days for your school to appear on the online application. You will be notified by email once your school has been added or the record has been updated.

2. Next, encourage students to apply.

After your school is registered, please encourage any eligible student to apply before graduation. Remember: To be eligible, the student must graduate from high school this year and begin a program of study at a participating career college before December 31, 2009. Students can apply and find participating colleges on our web site, www.Imagine-America.org, by selecting the Scholarship & Awards Program tab, then selecting the High School Students and Apply tabs, and following the prompts as directed.

3. Finally, approve or disapprove applications submitted by students from your school.

Whenever a student from your school has applied, an email notice will be sent to the registered contact person for your school. That contact person will be provided a user ID, a password and guidelines for logging into our web site to review and either approve or disapprove students’ applications. We ask that you approve applications before school closes for the summer for students who are on track to graduate and are likely to enroll in the postsecondary program of study they are pursuing.

Please update all applications according to the guidelines that will be provided, even for students whose eligibility you are unable to confirm. Your updates allow us to continue processing the students’ applications and prevent them from remaining in limbo through the summer break. Please contact me at 202.336.6724 if you need assistance.

So there you have it! Once you’ve registered your high school, encouraged eligible students to apply, and updated applications for those who have already applied, you can rest assured that you’ve done all you can to make sure your students don’t miss out on this rewarding opportunity!
