Should I Become a Non-Destructive Testing Technician?

Have you been thinking about pursuing a new career in the mechanical sciences? Non-destructive testing is an essential part of many industries, from manufacturing and construction to energy and defense. And you can find training that prepares you to become an NDT testing tech!

If you’re detail-oriented, have mechanical skills and dexterity, and can stand for long periods or lift heavy objects, this could be a great career path for you. Ready to learn more? Here’s what you can expect as a non-destructive testing technician.

What Do Non-Destructive Testing Technicians Do?

Non-destructive testing technicians perform quality control work to look for structural flaws like cracks or deterioration. They’re responsible for ensuring that a wide variety of components and products function as expected and meet standards and requirements. Testing can include visual, ultrasonic, radiographic, and other processes, so technicians will need to be trained on relevant equipment and systems.

Non-destructive testing is a critical step, and NDT technicians may perform that work in a wide range of fields. Whether it’s energy, manufacturing, or transportation—including aerospace, automotive, and aviation—skilled techs are needed.

How Much Do NDT Technicians Earn?

Pay for NDT techs can vary based on their level of experience, location, and employer. Techs may be employed by manufacturing companies, technical and professional firms, or even by themselves. They typically work full-time, though some may be required to work evenings, weekends, or overtime hours.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), quality control inspectors earned an annual median salary of more than $40,000—or hourly wages of nearly $20—in 2020. The lowest-paid 10% of inspectors earned less than $26,000, while the highest 10% earned more than $68,000.

How Can I Become a Non-Destructive Testing Technician?

The best way to get started in a new hands-on career is to get hands-on training! Attending a certificate or diploma program can help you learn what you need in order to find entry-level opportunities in as little as six months to a year.

If you’re ready to take your first steps toward an NDT technician career, the Imagine America Foundation is proud to partner with a robust network of schools who offer career and technical education programs all across the country. Search for one near you today!
