What Does a Motorcycle Technician Do?

What does a motorcycle technician do?

If you’re thinking about becoming a service technician but also have a love of motorcycles, pursuing a career as a motorcycle service technician could be the perfect fit!

What motorcycle techs do

Whether they’re working on motorcycles, watercraft, mopeds, or other two- or three-wheeled vehicles (including scooters and all-terrain vehicles, also known as ATVs), motorcycle techs perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair tasks.

That can include diagnostics and investigation into problems, replacing broken parts, installing new or custom components, and performing routine maintenance to keep the vehicle running smoothly and efficiently. That includes both regularly scheduled and emergency maintenance calls.

Making the choice

Motorcycle technicians typically need some postsecondary education or certification to begin working. And those who are most successful often have the mechanical, problem-solving, and communication skills to learn how to diagnose issues, make repairs, and communicate both problems and solutions to customers or clients.

Prospective techs should also be prepared to obtain a motorcycle endorsement on their driver’s license.

Motorcycle technician work

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the largest employers of small engine mechanics include motor vehicle and parts dealers, lawn and garden equipment and supplies stores, repair and maintenance facilities, and recreation industries.

They often work in noisy (but well-ventilated) shops and doing remote or onsite work (including making roadside calls). Plus, small engine mechanics and motorcycle technicians should be prepared to work in small or cramped spaces while working on vehicles.

Other things to consider

Also think about seasonal trends of work: because motorcycles are often used only seasonally (not to mention lawnmowers or other equipment), depending on the weather in the area, there could be a much higher need for motorcycle technicians’ services during the warmer months.

Some motorcycle techs also find success specializing in a particular brand by completing a manufacturer-specific training program. That can prepare you for a successful career with a specific company or organization.
