Imagine America Foundation Salutes Sharonda Davis with a 2008 LDRSHIP Award
Washington, DC (Sept 26, 2008) – The Imagine America Foundation is pleased to announce that the LDRSHIP Award for 2008 was awarded to Sharonda Davis for her outstanding achievements as both a student at Concorde Career Institute and as a soldier in the U.S. Navy.
Davis joined the Navy at the age of 18. Her mother had passed away and she wanted to make a future for herself and felt the military would be the best option. Forty-five days after Davis left her home in New Orleans where she was stationed, Hurricane Katrina hit.
“Everything I had was there,” says Davis. “I had to start over with basically nothing.”
Throughout her 12-year service career, Davis received numerous military awards and honors, including three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, four Good Conduct Medals, and two National Defense Service Medals.
On Tuesday, September 23, 2008, while in Washington, DC, Davis was honored with the Imagine America Foundation’s LDRSHIP Award.
The LDRSHIP Award was established to recognize outstanding career college students who have served their country honorably through military duty. The award is given annually to men and women nationwide who exemplify: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity and Personal Courage.
The awards ceremony took place in a prestigious IAF sponsored event on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, co-hosted by Military.com and in cooperation with the Career College Association. Davis, along with five other outstanding individuals was presented with a $5,000 cash grant to be used towards completing their career educations.
“It’s a privilege to honor the 2008 LDRSHIP recipients with this award,” said Robert L. Martin, Imagine America Foundation president. “For their admirable and courageous service to our country, we extend deepest appreciation. It’s now our turn to give something back to them.”
Davis is raising a family, working the third-shift, and going to school full-time because she is determined to provide a better future for her family. At Concorde Career Institute, Davis maintains a 4.0 GPA and has a perfect attendance record.
“For single parents,” says Davis, “who say it’s impossible to go to school, it’s not. If I can do it, anybody can. It’s not impossible. You’re going to be tired. But it’ll be worth it in the end. You just got to get there.”
