Heritage Institute Military Scholarship Student Wins Prestigious Imagine America Award
Jacksonville, FL – Heritage Institute pharmacy tech student, Edwin Ramosrey has won the prestigious Imagine America Foundation LDRSHIP scholarship to attend Heritage Institute in Jacksonville, FL.
“I’m so proud of my service to my country,” said Ramosrey. “I’m grateful to have the opportunity to live in a country that recognizes the importance of education and rewards service. It means a lot to have my service validated in this meaningful way. I expect to see enormous rewards as I transition to my second career in pharmacy technology.”
The $5,000 scholarship for active duty or honorably discharged military veterans is extremely competitive. In order to be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must have a 95% college attendance rate and a minimum GPA of at least 3.5. Six scholarships will be awarded from among 425 applicants. Mr. Ramosrey has maintained a 4.0 GPA at Heritage Institute, and a 100% attendance rate. Ramosrey served 27 years in the U.S. Army as a reconnaissance specialist in armored divisions. That means he was truly on the tip-of-the spear. His job was to reconnoiter the battlefield in advance of armored divisions.
During his time in the Army, Ramosrey served in the Germany, Bosnia, and Iraq (both gulf wars) theatres of operations, among others. Most recently, he participated in operation Iraqi Freedom (the invasion of Iraq in 2003) as part of the 1st Armored Division, and was stationed in Bagdad. He retired as a 1st Sergeant (E-8) in January of 2008.
His dedication to country has formed the cornerstone of his life and has continued in his family. Ramosrey has two sons currently serving in the U.S. Military. Ramosrey was flown to Las Vegas on June 27, 2008 in order to be awarded the scholarship at the Career College Association (CCA) annual Gala and award presentation. One highlight of the event was the opportunity to meet keynote speaker and former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich. “I want to make sure that I thank my instructor, Mr. Antonio Mack,” said Ramosrey. “Thanking him is not simply a matter of good manners. Mr. Mack was an enormous influence on me. He has been a mentor for me. His guidance and encouragement have made all the difference.”
The Imagine America Foundation established the LDRSHIP Award in 2004 to recognize and honor exceptional career college students who have served their country honorably in the military and decided to further their education. The LDRSHIP Award offers up to $5,000 in cash grants to active duty, reservist, honorably discharged or retired US military veterans attending a participating Imagine America institution.
