Medix School – Towson: “We Care”

Coming from a traditional four-year institution, I have always been curious about career schools. My trip to Medix School in Towson, Md., left me amazed at the exceptional service they provide to their students and also the critical skill shortage void they are helping to fill in the allied health sector.

To get a true sense of Medix School and its programs, I spoke with several Medix students and Imagine America scholarship recipients, such as Sarah Shanahan and Takeya Brooks, students in the Medical Assistant program, and Manuel Valerio. Here is what they said about Medix School.

When asked why she decided to attend Medix, Shanahan said, “At a traditional four-year college, you have to take many courses that don’t deal directly with your career, but when you come here your courses are focused strictly on your career.”

A diverse school of roughly 500 students, Medix has the feel of a close-knit family. With class sizes of about 25, students operate in small groups or partners. “Every person works together. Everything we learn, we do it with our partner,” said Brooks. For Brooks, attending Medix literally meant staying in the family; her mother, aunt and two cousins are all Medix School grads.

Students such as Manuel Valerio, who don’t want to get lost in the shuffle of a large school, choose Medix for its small class sizes and because it provides personal attention that leads students to success. Help is plentiful at Medix, with an extensive support system for both academic and personal problems. There is a mentoring program made up of experienced students who provide guidance. Medix also has a unique support resource for their students: a call center with Master’s-level counselors and face-to-face sessions with local counselors.

Trusting highly in the quality of their programs, Medix graduates make up half of the instructional staff. When speaking to Director of Admissions Liz Harper, she expressed the compassion that her faculty and staff have for their students. “We care [about our students]. We retain employees and students,” said Harper.

Medix has become a renowned name in the local medical community over the last 30 years, with graduates employed at places such as Maryland Pediatric Group, Johns Hopkins Community Physicians and University of Maryland Dental School.
