The Imagine America Foundation awarded $5,000 scholarships to retired and active duty military personnel attending career colleges at a ceremony held on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The Foundation established the Military Leadership Award in 2004 to recognize and honor exceptional career college students who have served their country honorably in the military and decided to further their education at Imagine America participating institutions.
In the first two years of this scholarship program, the Foundation awarded five outstanding recipients each year. Two years later, eight recipients received the award. And this year, in an extraordinary measure, due to the superior quality of over 200 applicants, the Foundation decided to host two rounds of nominations for the 2007 award, which resulted in 11 outstanding scholarship recipients. The award ceremony for recipients of the first round was held in June of 2007 in New Orleans at the annual Career College Association convention. And in October 2007, the Foundation hosted an award ceremony for the second round of scholarship recipients on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
State representatives spoke for each of the scholarship recipients at the award presentation. These members included Reps. Howard Coble (R-NC), Bart Gordon (D-TN), Lincoln Diaz-Balart (R-FL) and Tim Murphy (D-PA). Other congressional members also attended the event to express their support, including Reps. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX), Joe Wilson (R-SC), John Mica (R-FL) and Virginia Foxx (R-NC).
Congratulations to all the recipients!
