What are Millennials?

You might've heard the term millennials, and maybe even neo-millennials, but do you know what they are? The Imagine America Foundation, in collaboration with ED MAP, has developed a new webinar series devoted to answering this question. This series, designed to help better understand millennials, neo-millennials and virtual high school students, will be presented in four progressive sessions exploring this new generation of learners, their needs and expectations, how to get your institution on their radar, and how to prepare your institution for this new kind of learner.

In the first session of the series, "Understanding Millennials & Neo-Millennials," our expert, Susan Patrick, President and CEO of iNACOL, discussed the millennial generation. She found that this generation makes up 36% of the total population. According to Patrick, millennials are very technology-savvy: 90% of children between the ages of 5 and 17 use computers, 94% of teens use the Internet for school-related research, and 76% use instant messaging and social networking sites. What do millennials value? "Freedom and choice, customization and personalization, and constant innovation," said Patrick.

Well over 200 people signed up for the first session, and as a result, an overflow presentation was held. If you missed the first or second session, don't worry. We have recorded each session and the entire series will be made available on our web site, www.imagine-america.org, or by clicking here. A PDF version of each session will also be made available online.

The four-part series is broken down as follows:

  • Session One: Understanding Millennials & Neo-Millennials (January)
    • Who are millennials and neo-millennials?
    • Are millennials who attended virtual high school different from the rest?
    • What are their expectations of postsecondary education?
  • Session Two: Learning Environment 2.0 (February)
    • How to prepare your school for this kind of learner.
    • How to prepare your faculty for this kind of learner.
  • Session Three: Making the Most of Course Materials (March)
    • The latest data on how to convey course information to this learner.
    • Innovative ways of reaching this learner.
  • Session Four: How and Where to Reach Millennials (April)
    • Finding students on social network outlets, such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, blogs, etc.
    • How to effectively use these tools for your school.
